Wingfield Station 1839-40
The joiners sharpen tools at their long benches; they work
their chisels on French casement and fanlight windows
tri-partite doors and king-post trusses.
They construct lamb’s tongue glazing bars – ponder
the mysteries of false doorways and the imperfections
within mouthblown cylinder glass.
Stone blocks are brought by horse and cart from Ashover
and Whatstandwell. Stonemasons carve lintels
octagonal chimney pots and consider the truths of faux stacks.
A signwriter shifts his weight on the ladder, chalks out
his work and, with sable brushes, paints the letters
as the word WINGFIELD falls in increments from his hands.
